Hammond, Power And Cross Take Singles At Sussex Grand Prix by Ian Holman

Sussex county star Michael Hammond (pictured) took the Mens Singles title at the opening Sussex Grand Prix event of the season at Roffey Social & Sports Club on Sunday 9th December beating Epsom's Steve Lovett 3-0 in the final with an average of 30.67. On his way to the final Hammond knocked out Horley's Danny King and Crawley pair Martin Burchell and Steve Mecrow before dispatching Gavin Studholme 3-2 in the semi-finals with an average of 28.05 after going two-nil down. In the other semi-final Lovett beat Paul Russell 3-2 with a 23.79 average. Jake Watts caused a couple of early round shocks when he put out Tony Ayres and Dave Mansell. In the Ladies Singles final Surrey's Laura Power beat Mal Henry from Reading 3-0 with a 20.59 average and in the Youth Singles final Rob Cross beat Dave Weir 2-1 with a 19.25 average. 10 year old Charlie Little hit a maximum in his opening youth singles game.

Michael Hammond also won the Mens Pairs event with Craig Deeley beating Aaron Turner and Steve Lovett 3-0 in the final. Laura Power also completed a double with her Ladies Pairs partner Helen Cullip. They beat Mandy Perry and Teresa Weir 3-2 in the final. In the Flying Pairs competition Terry Harmsworth and Aaron Turner beat Jane Johnson and Graham Judge 3-0 in the final.
