Knockout & Consolation Cup Review (7th May 2008) by Dave Miles

134 checkout for Tony AyresThis week at the Star in Roffey, and the Southwater Club, the League staged its two Cup semi-final competitions. At the Star, it was the Knockout Cup competition featuring the reigning holders from Billingshurst, the Kings Arms. They drew fellow A Division opponents the Gate from Rusper, while their arch rivals the Nelson took on the sole B Division side left in the competition the Sussex Barn. Fresh from winning the A Division a few weeks ago, the Billingshurst side still have their sights set on a League & Cup double, and in the opening game against a strong Gate side suffered a minor setback when losing the opening double to Ty Coward & Keith Harlow, but with PDC star Tony Ayres (pictured) as backup, they quickly drew level and then took a 2-1 lead through Ayres & Matt Hoyte, and Nigel Wakefield & Ady Dudman. The six single games all went to the Kings Arms, with the Gate failing to win a single leg. Ayres shot a fine 134 checkout in celebration of his side reaching their second successive final. The Nelson had to chase down a spirited effort from the Sussex Barn, before their skipper Dave Miles struck the winning double in a 5-4 victory. The previous Cup winners could only field four players in the doubles, therefore conceding one double before play started, and things got worse as the Barn took the opening double through Merv Taylor & Paul Zewoi for a 2-0 lead, Miles & Andy Gurr pulled one back by winning the final double. Nelson had a fifth player for the singles, but still had to give one away, so went 3-1 down. Graeme Cargan, then Gurr won their games to level the scores 3-3, Rob Metcalf put them ahead for the first time in the match, before Miles struck the winner. Zewoi won the final game for the Sussex Barn, but by then it was too late. So an exciting final is in prospect at The Star on 14th May. At the Southwater Club, both semi-finals of the Consolation Cup went the full distance. In the first semi, Southwater Club from the B Division took on the Windmill of the A Division, and in the second semi another A versus B Division encounter pitted Springbok B against the Dog & Bacon. Both ties swung both ways before the Southwater Club took the ninth game in a great 5-4 win over their higher division opponents, and the Dog & Bacon did likewise to the Springbok B to create an all B Division final to be played at the Southwater Club on 14th May.

Week 22 Round-up (24th April 2008) by Dave Miles

H&W LogoThis week the league fixtures were concluded with the final B Division games. Alfold's Three Compasses had already clinched the B Division championship last week and in their final game had to play the Fountain B who were currently lying in second place. It proved to be a tight match with the Compasses finally edging it 5-4, the result cements the Alfold sides Championship and automatic promotion back to the A Division, while Fountains B's four points gained means they retained second spot, just one point ahead of Sussex Barn who finished with a 6-3 win over Fountain A to claim the third promotion place. The much improved Kings Arms pipped Southwater Club to a 5-4 win, despite John Hindle hitting a 180 for the Southwater side, leaving both sides in a safe mid table position. Roffey's Dog & Bacon beat lowly Springbok Club 7-2, while the best win of the week came at the Dog & Duck, when the hosts crashed 8-1 to the George & Dragon from Shipley. The Dog & Duck's defeat condems the Warnham side to pick up the coveted Wooden Spoon for finishing bottom of the League. The outstanding fixture between the Springbok Club & the Fountain A, was awarded a 4-4 draw, due to both sides unable to fix a date to play the game.

Weeks 20 & 21 Round-up (10th / 17th April 2008) by Dave Miles

H&W LogoOver the last two weeks of fixtures, both the A Division & B Division have new Champions crowned. The A Division have finished their fixtures, and Billingshurst's Kings Arms have emerged from third place to take the Championship in style winning their final two games 9-0. Both the Windmill & The Crown couldn’t test the new Champions.  The Rising Sun finished second, beating the previous Champions Nelson 6-3 in the final fixture and Roffey SSC 9-0 the previous week, while the Nelson's sole victory came at the Plough by 8-1, but it was enough for them to finish third. The Gate put two back to back 5-4 victories together, beating the Norfolk Arms and the Windmill.   Springbok B & the Crown were relegated, the Springbok lost both their two games 5-4 to the Crown and Roffey SSC, while the Crown finished bottom. The Plough avoided relegation by picking up useful points in their 5-4 defeat by the Norfolk Arms.
Three Compasses bounced straight back to the A Division after being relegated last season, the Alfold side clinched the B Division Championship with two 6-3 victories, beating Kings Arms (Horsham) & promotion rivals Malt Shovell.  The Shovell have completed their fixtures, so will have to wait for the final weeks results to see if they have done enough to stay in the top three and gain promotion. Fountain B will be promoted with the Compasses following two 5-4 wins over the Malt Shovell and the Southwater Club, while Sussex Barn could snatch third place after posting 8-1 & 7-2 victories over the Springbok Club & the Dog & Duck respectably, leaving the two defeated sides battling it out for the coveted Wooden Spoon. The Fountain suffered two defeats, losing narrowly 5-4 at the George & Dragon, and then heavily 8-1 at the Dog & Bacon, the Dog & Bacon also beat Southwater Club 5-4 to give them an outside chance of making the top three.
Over the two weeks, 180s were recorded by Windmill's Derek Adams, Dave Goddard of the Dog & Bacon and young Ashley Hammond who not only hit his third of the season for Southwater Club, but also struck to rarely hit 170 start [ Bull, T20,T20 ] against the Dog & Bacon.

H&W LogoThis week's games saw the Rising Sun go joint top of the A Division with the Nelson, the Nelson's better 180 record just keeps them top. Both the Nelson and the Kings Arms from Billingshurst had byes due to them playing each other earlier in a re-arranged fixture. The Rising Sun took full advantage by beating bottom side Crown 9-0. Roffey SSC defeated the Windmill 5-4 to remain in the top four, while fifth placed Gate overcame the Plough 6-3. Norfolk Arms skipper Graeme Brooker was in superb form against Springbok B, he struck a maximum, then followed that up with a 115 checkout that helped them gain a 5-4 win. Springbok skipper Stuart Cole responded well with a 109 finish of his own.
In the B Division, the Three Compasses of Alfold are moving away from the chasing pack following their 9-0 whitewash of the George & Dragon, they now lead the Division by seven points and have a game in hand on their nearest rival the Fountain B. The Sussex Barn's poor form continues with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Malt Shovell who remain in a strong third position. Springbok Club's match with the Fountain was postponed.

Knockout Cup Review by Dave Miles

Danny KingIn the Knockout Cup there were three Second Round matches with the tie of the round played out at the Kings Arms in Billingshurst, where the Cup holders played hosts to the Rising Sun, as expected a close game was had, with the holders finally going through 5-4, highlight of the match was a 120 checkout from the Sun's Danny King (pictured). B Division leaders Three Compasses found A Division opponents the Plough too strong eventually losing 5-4, while Roffey SSC comfortably eased through 8-1 against the Malt Shovell of the B Division.

Week 9 Round-up (6th December 2007) by Dave Miles

Andy MasonLast Thursday saw the final League action of the year take place. In the A Division, reigning Champions the Nelson have a three point cushion over the Rising Sun at the top of the table.  Both teams recorded 9-0 victories in their final games of the year, beating The Gate and the Plough respectably, the Sun's Andy Mason (pictured) shot out on 128, the weeks best. Close on the heels of the two leaders come the unbeaten Billingshurst side King Arms, they also won comfortably, beating the Norfolk Arms 8-1, with Paul Hopkins on target with a 180. Barry Dumbrill also grabbed a maximum for the Windmill, but all to no avail, as the Partridge Green side crashed 5-4 to the Springbok B. Roffey SSC move into the top half following their 7-2 win over the Crown from Alfold.
Last weeks leaders of the B Division George & Dragon, surprisingly were beaten by the Fountain 5-4, after their victory, Rachel Rooke's side move out of the bottom three. Replacing the George & Dragon at the top are the Three Compasses, the Alfold side received a 7-0 walkover when the Kings Arms of Horsham failed to show for their match, the Arms were deducted 5 pts as a penalty. The Malt Shovell ended the Fountain B's 100% record, beating them 5-4, while Percy Goacher struck a fine 111 checkout for the Dog & Bacon, in helping them to a 5-4 win over the Southwater Club. Sussex Barn's good form continues with a 6-3 victory over the Springbok Club, a win that moves them to within 1 point of a top three place.

Mick CurrenThe top two sides in the A Division clashed this week, both the Nelson & Billingshurst's Kings Arms went into the match proudly boasting 100% records after six games, but something had to give, with the match tied at 4-4, it was the Doubles pairing of skipper Adrian Dudman & Mark Knight that finally got the Kings Arms over the winning line, highlights of the evenings play was the 180 from Nelson's Mick Curren (pictured), with 115 & 114 finishes from Tony Ayes & Matt Smith respectably. Gaining ground on the top two are the Rising Sun, they travelled to the Crown in Alfold, and came away with a 8-1 victory, top performances in this game came from Alan Wyatt's 116 & John Dawes 112 checkouts. The Gates poor run of form continues, as they crashed 6-3 at the Plough in Lower Beeding, while at the Windmill, the hosts beat Roffey SSC 5-4. Despite losing 7-2 at the Norfolk Arms, the Springbok B moved of the foot of the table.
New leaders of the B Division, are the George & Dragon, the Shipley side ended the recent good run of victories by the Springbok Club, winning 8-1. The Three Compasses unbeaten record was shattered at the Dog & Bacon, as the hosts triumphed 6-3, leaving the Fountain B as the sole unbeaten side in the Division. As Sussex Barn's good run continues with a sound 8-1 thumping of the Southwater Club, the Malt Shovell's season gets worse after their 7-2 beating by Horsham's Kings Arms. Finally the Dog & Duck are still looking for their first win, after a narrow 5-4 defeat by the Fountain.

Dave MilesA maximum and a 104 checkout by Nelson's skipper Dave Miles (pictured) helped the reigning A Division Champions Nelson to their third straight 9-0 victory, their defeat of last season's B Division Champions the Plough leaves them 5 points clear of Billingshurst's Kings Arms. The Arms posted a 7-2 win at the Windmill in Partridge Green, helped by Mark Knight's 180 and a 115 finish from Adrian Dudman, while at Roffey SSC the hosts crashed 8-1 to the Rising Sun, with Gary Strong's 102 checkout being the highlight. The Norfolk Arms fought back from being 4-0 down, to surprise high flying Gate, by winning the remaining games for a 5-4 victory, and in the local derby in Alfold, the Springbok B recorded their first win of the season when beating bitter rivals Crown 5-4.
The B Division is now headed by the Fountain B, they take over from the Malt Shovell who lost their unbeaten record when going down to the Sussex Barn 5-4, leaving the Fountain B boasting a 100% record after beating the Dog & Bacon 6-3. The Three Compasses also remain unbeaten, they made the long trip to Shipley to play the George & Dragon worthwhile by winning 5-4. Springbok Club move off the bottom following a rare win, the Alfold side overcame the Fountain 5-4 in a nail biting finish. Knockout Cup First Round Review by Dave Miles

Nigel WakefieldOnly two sides in the A Division failed to make it to the Second Round of the Knockout Cup, all A v B Division clashes went in favour of the A Divisions sides, except one, at the Three Compasses the hosts edged out the Windmill 5-4 to produce the only shock of the round, while Springbok B also crashed out 9-0 in an all A Division match at the Nelson. The reigning Cup holders Billingshurst's Kings Arms helped by a 105 checkout from Nigel 'Geordie' Wakefield (pictured) comfortably went through beating the Dog & Duck from Warnham also 9-0, while both the Crown & the Gate struggled to beat lower division opposition in the Fountain & Dog & Bacon respectably by a narrow 5-4 scoreline. The Plough & Norfolk Arms both won 6-3 against Southwater Club and the George & Dragon. Roffey SSC made the long trip to the Springbok Club worthwhile, beating the hosts 8-1.  There were two all B Division clashes, leaders the Malt Shovell eased through by beating Horsham's Kings Arms 6-3, and Sussex Barn helped by a 99 checkout from Matt Goldsworthy [ 19, double 20, double 20] to dispose of the high flying Fountain B 5-4. Joining the winning teams in the next round will be the Rising Sun who had received a bye

Week 5 Round-up (1st November 2007) by Dave Miles

Tony AyresBillingshurst's Kings Arms threw down the gauntlet to all the other teams in the A Division as they showed that they are determined to bring the Championship to Billingshurst this season. This week led by the superb Tony Ayres they trounced leaders Rising Sun 7-2, with Ayres notching a 180, and then hitting the seasons highest checkout a 161, the Sun's Andy Mason hit a consolation maximum. Replacing the Rising Sun at the top are the reigning champions Nelson, they completed a 9-0 whitewash over their hosts the Crown in Alfold. Rusper's Gate are continuing their good start to the season with a 7-2 victory at the Springbok Club against Springbok B, while at the Windmill in Partridge Green the home side edged out the Norfolk Arms 5-4. After three consecutive defeats Roffey SSC finally found a winning formula when beating the Plough 6-3..
The Malt Shovell  are the new leaders of the B Division following their fine 6-3 victory against former early season leaders George & Dragon, highlight being a 107 checkout by Paul Moulding leaving the Shovell one of three sides proudly boasting a 100% record. The previous weeks leaders Fountain B drop down to 2nd despite a 5-4 win over the Sussex Barn, they also keep a 100% record, but both the top two sides must be looking over their shoulders, because in third place are the unbeaten Three Compasses, the Alfold side are 2 pts adrift but do have a game in hand after last weeks 7-2 beating of the Dog & Duck. The Dog & Bacon inflicted a third consecutive defeat on Horsham's Kings Arms, beating them 6-3, while the Fountain also suffered a 6-3 reverse when losing to the improving Southwater Club.

Week 3 Round-up (18th October 2007) by Dave Miles

Tony AyresIts tight at the top of the A Division with no fewer than four sides jointly sharing top spot with fourteen points. Matt Hoyte's maximum hit in week one just puts Billingshurst's Kings Arms on top, last week they beat Springbok B 6-3, helped by the seasons top checkout, a 121 from Tony Ayres (pictured).  The reigning Champions the Nelson played hosts to the Windmill and won 7-2, two 100+ finishes were posted, 119 & 110 from Andy Gurr & Dave Miles for the Champions.  Rising Sun scraped a 5-4 win at the Norfolk Arms, while the Gate also notched a 5-4 victory at Roffey SSC. This seasons two promoted teams clashed at the Crown in Alfold, with the hosts beating the Plough narrowly 5-4.
As in the A Division, things are tight in the B Division. The George & Dragon top the table by one point from the Fountain B after both sides posted good wins last week. The Dragon ended the Kings Arms unbeaten start winning comfortably 7-2, while a 180 from Mark Greet helped the Fountain B to a 7-2 victory over the Dog & Duck. The Malt Shovell made it three successive wins when beating the Fountain 6-3 leaving them two points adrift from the top, while the Three Compasses also grabbed a 6-3 victory after defeating local rivals Springbok Club to move into the top four with a game in hand of their three rivals at the top. Another 6-3 win came for the Sussex Barn, who beat the Dog & Bacon.

H&W LogoThe A Division joined the action in week two of the new season. Billingshurst's Matt Hoyte struck the only 180 for the Kings Arms during their clash with Roffey SSC in Billingshurst, helping them get off to a great start winning 8-1. But starting even better were the Gate from Rusper and the Rising Sun, they beat the Crown and Springbok B respectably 9-0. Reigning Champions the Nelson, faced a tricky away game at the Norfolk Arms, but eventually came away with a 7-2 victory. Last seasons B Division Champions the Plough from Lower Beeding got off to a winning start by beating the Windmill 5-4.
The 2nd week of games in the B Division again produced some close results. Four teams have identical points, so jointly share the lead, Fountain B, George & Dragon, Kings Arms & the Malt Shovell have all won their opening two matches. Last week the Fountain B beat their A team 5-4, Kings Arms beat Dog & Duck also 5-4, George & Dragon won 5-4 against Dog & Bacon, while the Malt Shovell beat the Springbok Club 6-3. After week one's bye, the Three Compasses of Alfold started their campaign with victory at Southwater Club, winning 6-3.

Week 1 Round-up (4th October 2007) by Dave Miles

H&W LogoLast Thursday, saw the opening rounds of fixtures for the new season. Only the B Division, minus the Three Compasses who had a bye were in action.   All results were in on time, even the post strike couldn't delay the results.  So a big thanks to you for your efforts!!.
Of the five fixtures played, four of them ended with a 6-3 scoreline. The Dog & Bacon put their relegation from last season behind them as they welcomed new team Dog & Duck to the League by beating them 6-3, also victorious 6-3 were the Kings Arms, Fountain B & the George & Dragon, they beat the Fountain, Springbok Club and Sussex Barn respectably. The Malt Shovell players moved across town from the Rising Sun and started their campaign with a win, they overcame Southwater Club 5-4.
In summing up the start of the B Division, I think the scores in the opening games suggest that a close season lies ahead.
