Sussex Suffer Heavy Defeat by Barry Moody
added Monday 7th December 2009
Michael Hammond
Sussex hopes of promotion this season in the Rileys Inter Counties League took a jolt after losing 23-13 to top of the table London at the Roffey Social & Sports Club at the weekend. Previously unbeaten Sussex were outscored in Saturday’s 'B' team matches, with London hitting 117 tons to Sussex's 96 and winning the Ladies match 4-2 and the Men’s 8-4. Rhonda West (Lewes) started the day well for Sussex gaining the lady-of-the-match award with a 15.26 winning average, but, in a much changed side only Teresa Weir (Eastbourne) was the only other Sussex lady to come out on top. The Men’s 'B' also began well with wins for Dave Creasy (Eastbourne), Russell Vanner (Brighton) and man-of-the-match Peter Stoner (Worthing) averaging 25.05 in a 3-0 win. From that point London were in charge taking seven of the remaining eight games to finish the day 12-6 ahead. Simon Morris (Newhaven) was the only winner for Sussex in that spell. On Sunday the Ladies 'A' fought back from 3-0 down with wins for Hayley Gatford (Bognor) and lady-of-the-match Donna Rainsley (Hailsham) with a 22.77 winning average. Sadly for Sussex the visitors took the final game to win 4-2 and make the overall match score 16-8 to London. Ken Sowerby (Worthing) made a bright start for Sussex on his return to the Men’s 'A' side winning 3-0 with a 26.84 average. As on the previous day London once again raised their game to win the next five sets and with them, securing the three bonus points. Now playing for pride the Sussex men at last began to hit the winning doubles and they levelled their match score at 5-5. Jason Hills (Bognor), Jim Withers (Eastbourne), Michael Donegan (Newhaven) and team mate Michael Hammond (pictured) were all winners with Hammond taking the match award for a 29.18 winning average. London finished their highly successful weekend by taking the last two games for a 7-5 win in a match where Sussex hit 92 tons to the visitor’s 87 with both teams sharing twelve maximums This defeat puts Sussex seven points adrift of the Division Two promotion places and makes a win against newly promoted Devon in Exeter in January essential.

Shirley Moody - A Great Loss To Crawley Darts by Ian Holman
updated Monday 3rd May 2010
Shirley MoodySadly, I have to report that Shirley Moody (wife of Barry Moody) passed away in the early hours of Wednesday 21st April 2010 at East Surrey hospital in Redhill. Shirley was a popular character and was always alongside Barry helping him run local leagues and competitions in and around the Crawley area as well as being involved in the Sussex County team and Super League as a player, team manager and treasurer. I know she will be missed by many of you and will never be forgotten. She was a true lady and one in a million. A facebook group has been set up by Gary Simpson and to show how popular Shirley was, it had already attracted 194 members by 9pm on Wednesday 28th April. Shirley's funeral took place at Surrey & Sussex Crematorium in Balcombe Road, Crawley on Friday 30th April.
Bates And Anderson Claim PDC Titles by Ian Holman
added Monday 29th March 2010
Barrie BatesThe K2 in Crawley played host to some of the best darts players in the world last weekend with Barrie Bates (picured) winning Saturday’s players championship event from a field of 142 players and Gary Anderson winning the UK Open qualifier the following day from 149 entries. With the exception of 15 times world champion Phil Taylor, Dennis Priestley and Terry Jenkins all the top pdc players were in action as some scintillating darts were thrown in the main hall of the K2 as players competed on 16 boards. With Crawley’s Martin Burchell no longer on the pdc circuit, local support was focused on former Crawley super league player Tony Ayres. Saturday’s Players Championship (one in a series of 34 events played around Europe during the year) saw Ayres falter in the preliminary round as he lost 6-4 to Hampshire’s Colin Monk despite hitting five 180s. Former BDO champion Andy Fordham also lost out in the same round and there were opening round defeats for Ronnie Baxter, Colin Lloyd, Wes Newton, Steve Beaton and Peter Manley. Adrian Lewis beat Raymond van Barneveld 6-3 in the tie of the second round and a round later a roar came from board eight as Andy Hamilton took out a nine dart finish. Denis Ovens made a couple of couple of great comebacks as he progressed to the final, coming from 5-1 down to beat Vincent van der Voort 6-5 in the quarter-finals and then going on to beat James Wade 6-5 from 5-2 down. Barrie Bates met Ovens in the final after taking out Mark Walsh 6-2 in the quarters and Steve Maish 6-4 in the semis. Ovens looked to have the final won when he lead 5-3 but this time it was Bates that turned things around to win 6-5 and claim his first title on the tour for four years.
Gary AndersonSunday’s UK Open Qualifier (the fourth in a series of eight played around England) saw better form from local hope Ayres as he opened up with 6-4 wins against Robert Alford and Martyn Turner to make the last 32 where he came up against world number three Wade. Wade though was too strong on the day as he took out winning legs of 13, 14, 14, 12, 16 and 15 to win 6-2 with a 95.61 average. Once again there were early exits for some top players with Surrey’s Gary Eastwood beating Adrian Lewis 6-3 a highlight. Sunday’s final saw Gary Anderson (pictured) take on Wes Newton in what proved to be a classic match. Anderson had beaten Raymond van Barneveld 6-2 in the quarters and then took out an 11 dart leg in the decider to beat Andy Hamilton in the semis while Newton beat Justin Pipe 6-2 in the quarters and came from 5-4 down to beat James Wade 6-5 averaging 102.53.
Anderson took out 110 in the opening leg of the final but he then let a 2-0 lead slip to go 4-3 down. He then responded with finishes of 50 and 85 to go 5-4 up and was sitting on 52 when Newton took out a sensational 156 finish to take the match into a deciding leg. UK Open
Tony 'T-Man' Ayres excellent run in the Rileys UK Open Championship at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton finally came to an end at the Semi-Finals stage this evening when he lost out to Scottish number one Gary Anderson 10-3. His performance in the semis didn't match the previous rounds but Sussex will be proud of his effort over the past few days. This afternoon he beat world number three James Wade 10-9 in the Quarter-Finals. Having taken an early 3-0 lead Ayres missed a dart at double top to go four up but took the next to lead 4-1 at the first break. The legs then went with throw in the second session as T-Man went into the next break 6-4 up. Ayres then made a mistake in the next leg as he hit the wrong double but eventually took the leg on his next throw to lead 7-4. Wade won the next with throw before Ayres set himself up on 24 with a score of 177 only for the Aldershot man to take out 101 finishing on double top. Ayres responded superbly in the next leg hitting 140, 100, 140, 57 and took out 64 in two darts to break back. T-Man then missed five darts at a double in the next leg to go within a leg of victory. Going into the final session with an 8-7 lead, all looked lost for the Billingshurst man when Wade took the next two legs to lead 9-8 and started the next with a 180. Wade then missed three darts at a double and Ayres took out a superb 152 finish to take the match to a decider. The former Crawley super league player then took advantage of the throw with scores of 100, 134, 134, 97 to set up double 18 for the match. One dart was all he needed  with Wade back on 181. Ayres got to the Quarters with wins against Paul Whitworth 6-4, Pete Fisher 9-3, Mark Walsh 9-7 and Alan Tabern 9-5.
