The
"Crawley Open" stays in Sussex thanks to Billingshurst star Tony Ayres (pictured)
taking the title at a packed Labour Supporters Club in West Green. Fresh
from recent wins at the Dorset and Chichester Open events, Tony dominated a
64 strong field which included top players from across the South of England.
Last year's winner Jim Withers (Eastbourne), went out in the Quarter-Finals
to Essex star James Allison in a high-scoring match.
Tony
battled through five rounds to win this ever popular event, beating
Crawley's Martin Burchell and Allison to reach the final. There he was
opposed by the PDC ranked Lionel Sams but secured the match with his
accurate scoring and finishing to win 3-0 with a 25.47 average and take the
title and £250 'Scottish and Newcastle' sponsored cash prize.
On his
way to the final Lionel defeated Surrey's John Ferrell and Sussex 'A' team
player Ken Sowerby (Worthing).
The
Ladies event attracted a smaller entry this year but still produced a top
class final featuring Lewes Super League star Elaine Chapman and local girl
Jo Lynch. Elaine reached the final by beating last year's winner Sue Bird
(Edenbridge) and in a close fought final she showed all the class that has
won her a place in the Sussex County squad this season, winning 3-0 and
collecting the £40 cash prize.
Labour
Club star Stuart Campbell made up for his First Round exit from the Open by
winning the plate event and the £80 cash prize. The popular "Dingles" player
defeated Horley's Tim King 2-0 in the final.
The
Flying Pairs competition, always well supported, saw Crawley's Dave Miles
team up with Sussex County star Jim Withers to take the £100 prize money
beating Danny King (Roffey) and local youngster Paul Richardson in the
final.
Organisers, Crawley Monday League distributed more than £900 in cash in
prize monies over the four events. Full results of all four competitions are
now available on the links above.
