Jason Yates Wins Merit Cup  by Ian Holman
Merit CupGreyhound player Jason Yates (pictured) was in great form at Three Bridges Football Club on Friday 5th June as he won the Bedford Sports sponsored Merit Cup, beating Royal Bridges' Ron Clarke 6-3 in the Final. Yates blitzed his way through the opening two rounds, beating teammate Andy MacIntosh and Diamonds' Nick Edwards both 4-0. He then played a topsy-turvy Semi-Final against another Diamonds player (Colin Whiley). Yates took a 3-1 lead but Whiley responded well by taking the next three legs. From 4-3 down Yates went on to win the next two legs to book his place in the Final. Clarke trailed Tommy Lewis 3-1 in his opening match before reeling off three legs to advance to the last eight where he met his Royal Bridges teammate Kevin Reilly who had dumped out Charcoal Burner's Ken Sowerby 4-0 in the First Round. Missed chances cost Reilly dear as Clarke went through 4-1 to meet Charcoal Burner's Richard Stanford. Stanford put out teammate Lee Gladman 4-3 and Kez Botting 4-0 for his place in the Semi-Finals but came unstuck as Clarke advanced to the Final with a 5-1 win..
